Number One Source For Fashion Support

The word “Fashion” is a word that can be found in your typical Webster dictionary, however when approached and asked how would you define fashion, have you ever realized that the word might be easily definable, yet defined so differently by every person? To me, fashion goes far beyond what the latest trends are and is a way of expressing “yourself” and showing off to the world who you truly are. I believe fashion can be expressed in multiple ways because it exemplifies what you think is trendy or chic, regardless of what the latest magazines are illustrating. Fashion is an expression of one’s self, not a reflection of what someone else wants you to be. It’s both a lifestyle, and a language in itself.

Have you ever caught yourself rummaging through your closet wondering, “Will people like this outfit?” I can definitely say that you could have caught me multiple times doing a 360 in the mirror wondering if my peers would consider the outfit I had on as fashionable. Throughout my high school years, I always wanted to make sure I “fit in” with the latest fashion trends, which did not take long for me to come to the realization that I spend way too much time reading fashion blogs and magazines. This led me to believe that I was spending more time worrying about what I thought I should wear, rather than wanting to wear what I felt comfortable in. In our society, it is considered normal to be wearing the stereotypical North Face and UGG boot when winter emerged. It wasn’t until college, when I finally realized it was time to find myself, and see myself as a blank canvas. I stopped trying to wear what everyone else was wearing and decided that instead of being a replica of my classmates, I was going to be different. It took me a while to figure out that this is how it should have been all along. I wish I figured it out sooner, but then again, don’t we all just want to be accepted?

Nowadays, when I see a whole spectrum of girls wearing the latest outfit featured on the store mannequin, I think to myself, “How boring”, which is true! People do not realize that it is important to be an individual and stand out, not be clones of one another. Fashion should be something enjoyable; like a form of art. If you are just like one of the “typical girls” then what fun is that? Fashion is about experimentation; finding what you feel comfortable in and can feel the inner model within yourself. I can’t tell you how many times I will go into the dressing at Forever 21 or H&M just to find the right type of shirt I am envisioning in my head. It is important to always remember, changing up your style once in a while never hurts either; you never know what you will suit you best until you give it a chance.

Fashion is the one-way people can get to know you, without having to verbally speak to you. With fashion, you can intimidate others, or be easily admired. If you are well dressed for an interview, you are most likely going to be considered before the other interviewees who dressed poorly. Your fashionable wardrobe giving you a one-up on your competition can’t get better than that, right? If you are having a bad day, or just feeling lazy and want to spend the day watching movies or lounging on the couch, you may walk out of the house in sweatpants, no harm in that. Contrary, if you woke up feeling great, you typically will spend more time getting dolled up in the mirror. Fashion allows one to express their emotions, without having to verbally say how they are feeling.

It has become more apparent that people are becoming wrapped up in weight, trying to resemble the models often featured in magazines. I cannot voice enough how strongly I believe that women should wear whatever they feel they look good in, regardless of their weight. Everyone is their own person; personality wise and physically, no two people are exactly the same. This is who I am, this is how I feel, are two phrases that emphasize a form of self-expression. Just because you might not be a size 0, does not mean you have to avoid the cute clothes in the store. Nowadays, designers are making their clothing in multiple sizes so they can fit all shapes and sizes. Seventeen Magazines always does a feature, which I admire, that gives advice on what type of clothes might look good on different body shapes. If you haven’t already, I highly recommended picking up a Seventeen Magazine and reading this section!

What Does Fashion

Fashion does not always mean that, you have to wear what the others wear. How about thinking, I will make the world wear what I wear? You can always make your own style statement, is it not?

If you had this misconception that fashion is only for the slim and trim, then think again. Even the clothing industry has now realized that a perfect body is not what everyone possesses. So clothes that fit one and all have been designed and that is good news for those who wear plus-sized clothes.

Several new trends have sprung up in the clothes’ market these days. New innovations not only in style but also in textiles and fabrics have emerged.

For instance consider leggings, which have made a super comeback and are seen just about everywhere. Leggings of all kind like textured, of different fabrics are in vogue. Basically the layered look is in. The other layering styles include wearing two tops, one over another or sporting a jacket over a top and many more such styles. Capris are steadily doing better and long skirts are the top choice of women wanting to look feminine and elegant.

Another trend are the military patterned clothes. They stand out in the crowd and look very fashionable too. They somehow give you a feeling that you are dressing with a purpose! Well, the purpose here, as we all know, is to look dashing!

These days, ‘bold’ is the word to look out for. Bold colors, bold prints, bold patterns, bold cuts are ruling the fashion scene currently. It gels so very well with the bold attitude of the youth today, who care a damn about what others think and that has reflected in their fashion too. The apt word for the fashion today is also ‘shocking’, as every other outfit is different and has something unique and attractive and it never ceases to surprise you.

When it comes to summer, fashion in this season asks for sober and pastel colors. Floral prints are also in for this summer. And in the scorching summer heat, one is bound to sweat. Sweat not only leads to body odor but also spoils clothes. Sweat-resistant clothes or clothes that emit fragrance are a great boon to people who wear tight clothes or who live in weathers that are hot. This way, the clothes last longer and can be used over and over again without getting spoilt. Especially fabrics like silk stain easily and the stains do not go even after a lot of washing and dry cleaning. But sweat proof clothing solves all these problems. In fact these days, clothes are stain-resistant and even waterproof.

And smart clothing has acquired an altogether new meaning today. It simply does not mean dressing in a chic manner but dressing in a technical manner. Imagine this, clothes fitted with solar panels so that they generate the necessary heat to keep you warm in the extreme cold as and when you want. Simply great, is it not? And some clothes have high tech mechanisms to control most of your favorite gadgets. Can you beat that? Certainly not!

Sustainable Fashion Mean To You

Conventional cotton accounts for close to 50% of all textile fiber production and is probably an even worse environmental polluter when compared to synthetic fibers such as polyester. Conventional cotton follows a dirty, exploitative path to the end consumer and we can change that, if we choose.

One of the biggest environmental hazards of conventional cotton is the use of agricultural chemicals which not only pose serious human health concerns, but also environmental degradation tragedies. Let’s look at some facts:

– Cotton chews through 10% of all worldwide pesticides and 25% of the world’s insecticides each year despite only accounting for 2.5% of all arable land,

– 10,400 people in the US die annually from pesticide related cancers resulting largely form drinking water contaminated by agricultural chemicals,

– It takes about 1/3 of a pound of agricultural chemicals to produce a single cotton T-shirt,

– Mono-cultured conventional cotton losses valuable topsoil much more rapidly than organically grown cotton,

– The agricultural chemicals used to treat cotton crops are highly toxic. Of the nine most readily used, five are probable carcinogens,

– Significant fish and bird kills have resulted from the legal application of pesticides, with millions of fish and birds estimated to die from pesticide exposure each year,

– In recent studies of major rivers and streams, one or more pesticides were detected more than 90% of the time in water, in more than 80% of fish sampled, and in 33% of major aquifers,

– 50% of all Egyptian farmers suffer from chronic pesticide poisoning which results in vision and neurological disorders,

– 54% of all pesticides used annually in India are applied to cotton crops which cover only 5% of the land,

– One drop of aldicard (a cotton crop pesticide) can kill an adult, yet children and adults alike work with this chemical, 1 million kilos of which was applied to cotton crops in the US in 2003.

By choosing to buy sustainable fashion, we can make a difference, one shirt at a time. In fact, through awareness that charitable groups and socially responsible groups have brought forward about the impact of fast fashion, people have been demanding ethical fashion in ever growing numbers. Because over 70% of the North American economy is driven by the consumer, many corporations have taken notice by cleaning up their manufacturing, supply and distribution chains. So, yes, we can make a difference but there is still a long way to go. By choosing to support sustainable clothing, you are helping to bring positive change and that is something to be proud of.

Fashion Means Evolution

Humans by nature are very fashionable. We always want to make all the things that we wear are up-to-date, because we desire to be desired. Both men and women are conscious of their appearance. They say that, “what you wear shows who you are”. This means that one could know the personality of a person just by looking at the things that he or she wears.

There are so many famous designers that make this fashionable world go round. Some brands of these designers include Gucci, Chanel, Prada, and Louis Vuitton. Bags, belts, wallets, shoes, accessories, and clothes come with these brands. They are widely known all over the world, but not widely used due to their skyrocketing prices. Even though they’re expensive, many people choose these items because of their elegant design and durability. When it comes to fashion, one could forget the price.

There are people who take fashion very seriously. They constantly watch fashion shows, read magazines and go to the mall to find a new outfit. They also buy things regardless of the price. But the most important thing by being fashionable is that you wear your clothes and accessories with grace and pride.

Another factor that defines fashion is variety. Many people, especially the teenagers, want to look smart, charming, fresh, and cool in their outfits. One could instantly achieve these characteristics by having the latest shoes, hairdos, clothes and other accessories. I am sure that all of us own different varieties of items in our wardrobe. We often mix and match them to have a different look everyday. There is no such thing as vintage in the world of fashion. You always have to be updated and follow the trend. It is because fashion follows a simple rule: wear what’s new and forget what’s out.

Following ‘what’s in’ is not that bad. This only means that we are experiencing evolution. Clothes change the same way we humans do. They also have a time line that can be connected to our history. We have different styles of clothing since the medieval times, the 80s, 90s and of course, the modern times. These clothes just keep on changing depending on what kind of generation they’re in. So don’t expect that your favorite designer dress and accessories will be a hit ten years from now.
